The REDD+ Management Agency Explains the Status of Demonstration Activities in Indonesia

SIEJ, Jakarta – In 2009, Indonesia voluntarily declare is committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020 by 26 % on own efforts or reached 41 % with international aid. As part of this commitment, the Government formed REDD+ Management Agency who confirmed by the president on August 31, 2013 through the Presidential Regulation No.62 by 2013.

REDD+ program in Indonesia (Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) is a climate change mitigation in peat and forest sectors, through collaboration with all stakeholders. REDD+ Management Agency (MA) on duty to help the president in carrying out the task of coordination, synchronization, planning, facilitation, management, monitoring, surveillance and control of REDD+ in Indonesia.

Nur Masripatin, Deputy of the governance and Institutional Relations REDD+ MA, said that REDD+ MA should be able to synergize the various programs and realize the cooperation of various parties to achieve the objectives of the program. “The purpose of the program is to reduce emissions and improve governance by using a variety of Demonstration Activities (DA) as positive learning materials in the future,” he explained in Jakarta (12/8).

According to data of REDD+ MA, Until now it has registered at least 70 DA in Indonesia. This activity involves more than 50 parties related to forestry and climate change, such as the Ministry of forestry, local government, local and international NGOs, the private sector, research institutions, indigenous peoples, as well as a variety of donor agencies.

The activity of demonstration or the DA itself is the methodological development and testing activities, technology and the institution of forest management in the framework of the implementation of REDD+ readiness phase. In other words, the DA is regarded as a means of learning for the Government of Indonesia to undertake the implementation of REDD+.

Noviana Widyaningtyas, Head of Climate Change Affairs, the Centre of Standardization of Environment and Climate Change (Pustanling), the Ministry of Forestry said about the status of DA in Indonesia. “Since late 2010 to 2013, Pustanling has done about four to five times DA review in Indonesia.”

He explained the evaluation of DA in Indonesia show more than 30 REDD+ DA has been monitored well using various approaches scope and methods, where most classified as DA learning and can be developed to become result based DA.

“The Ministry of forestry also continues to provide support for the construction and development of REDD+ DA, among others, in the form of SNI Carbon Accounting, SNI Holding REDD+ DA, and development of REDD-SIS ,” he added.

In this meeting also discussed the Jurisdictional Approach (JA) which is an approach to program implementation of REDD+ in the provincial administrative regions or counties. Relation to the DA is so far Pilot project is in the area of administrative in many regions in Indonesia, so for the development of JA in the future are expected to begin with the experience of the DA in order to strengthen the report planning and verification of REDD+ program at district level and the province.

Agus Sari, Deputy of REDD+ MA Planning and Funding Affairs explained that the DA became the initial capital to expand the REDD+ JA, design the REDD+ in wide scale, build local government commitment to REDD+, allows REDD+ integration into the development process of the region, and strengthen the technical aspects such as Rails, MRV and safeguards.

In the future, it is expected there is agreement between the DA perpetrator to communicate their programs on a regular basis through the official forums. All the proposals and information from DA perpetrator can be used as capital for the implementation of REDD+ in Indonesia. Januar Hakam.
