Fish bombing in Raja Ampat at Alarming Rate

Sorong, Ekuatorial – Fishing using bombs still rife in the waters of Fam and Miosmanggara island, West Waigeo District, Raja Ampat, West Papua. Chairman of the Indigenous Council of Mayans, Kristian Thebu, said that there is a lack of Patrol.

Due to the recurrence of fish bombing, three villages namely Fam Village, Saobabu Village, and Saopapir Village demanded that the waters which stretches from the Pianemo Island to Bamboo Island soon became indigenous protected area. Tribal Council of the Mayans has prepared customary law to impose customs fines against any violations that disturb the marine ecosystem. “Indigenous Assembly will process violations and determine the customary sanctions such as fines on confiscation bail,” said Kristian.

Meanwhile, the head of Raja Ampat Water Police , Krezman Mulalinda, said that a routine patrol in Raja Ampat waters territorial is still constrained by budgets. “In the future, we are ready to patrol in that area.
