The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) and its global network of Regional and Thematic OBIS Nodes integrate marine species distribution data from many sources over a wide range of marine themes; from the poles to the equator and from microbes to whales. OBIS is at the same time the data integration component of the Census of Marine life, the marine subnetwork of GBIF, and the biodiversity data management component of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The Shannon Index of Biodiversity is one of a series of statistics calculated from the OBIS data holdings on a regular basis. This index is calculated for 50 specimens and a grid of 1 degree resolution produced. Red colors represent high values, blue colors represent low values. Grid cells with less than 50 records were left blank.
