Natural disasters increasing in Gunungkidul district

YOGYAKARTA (kabarkota.com) – Due to increasing land slides and waterspouts, Gunungkidul district government continues its efforts to mitigate natural disasters.

Numbers of landslides areas in the district have been increasing. Initially, landslides occur in Gedangsari and Patuk sub-districts but Semin and Ponjong sub-districts are predicted to experience similar issues. The government is now focusing on mitigating two locations, Gedangsari and Patuk.

“[We are] prioritizing those two locations which are prone to landslide,” said head of Gunungkidul districk, Badingah at the Palace Complex, in Yogyakarta, on Saturday (14/2).

In addition, Wonosari city which was not categorized as a prone area to natural disaster got hit by waterspout yesterday.

Badingah said that they were currently coordinating with Gunungkidul Disaster Mitigation Agency and Yogya administration. Besides discussing on mitigating [natural disasters], the coordination [meeting] also discussing on the budget. “We are still coordinating on the budget,” said Badingah.

Furthermore, she said that the government had planned to relocate villagers affected by these natural disasters. However, the plan got stalled because not all villagers wanted to be relocated.

“If [the area] is prone [to natural disasters], we will relocate [people]. It is to minimize victims, either people or belongings,” she said.
