Ekuatorial, Lima — Executive Secretary of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, Christiana Figueres, said that this was an ambitious year for climate change, at the opening of the Lima Climate Conference, on Monday (1/12).

Around 195 nations attended the 20th Conference of Parties (COP 20) and the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 10), from December 1 to 12.

Figueres underlined four crucial issues needed to be solved at the COP. First, to establish protocol as replacement of Kyoto Protocol, which will end next year. The second issue is emission reduction target from every countries before 2020. In addition, Green Climate Fund which serve as official climate funding under UNFCCC. The fourth issue is emission reduction without delays.

At COP 13 in Warsaw, Poland in 2013, the convention had agreed that each parties will deliver their “intended nationally determined contributions” (iNDC) which include emission reduction targets post 2015. These targets will be the baseline to determine emission reduction in the new protocol. Countries which are ready with their iNDC are expected to report by the first three semester of 2015.

To underline the importance of COP 20, Figueres said that four issues were like litmus papers of the success of the conference. “It’s time for us to make pathways which would be timeless such as Nazca lines,” she said.

Peru’s Minister of Environment who also serve as President COP 20, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, said that government of Peru was fully supportive for the conference to produce significant documents. “We expected that convention will results on decisions about mitigation pre 2020, REDD+, GCF capitalized, and text drafts for new climate protocol,” said Pulgar-Vidal.

To encourage for delegates to be able to produce important decision, there will be “Climate Action Day” on December 11, where non parties representatives from civil societies, youth communities, indigenous people, and other groups will be given chances to say their wishes and demands in front of delegations from all over the world.
