Jakarta, Ekuatorial \u2013 The Ministry of Environment promised to revitalized its clean city awards following criticisms on the low credibility of the program, said a senior official. <\/p>\n
The clean city award, dubbed as Adipura award which was launched since 1986, is under heavy criticisms for being not truly reflecting the cities\u2019 performance on environment and not being transparent in the implementation, and low public participation. <\/p>\n
\u201cTo answer those critics, we will upgrade the program by establishing Adipura City as not just \u2018free of waste\u2019 but also as a sustainable, healthy, and green city,\u201d said Rasio Ridho Sani, deputy for toxic, dangerous, and waste management, in Jakarta, Wednesday (27\/8). <\/p>\n
Furthermore, he said that cities will also be assessed for their open green spaces, biodiversity, clean air and water.
\nSudirman, assistant deputy on waste management at the ministry, said that there were four components of assessments. \u201cThey are open green space, waste management, water quality, and air,\u201d said Sudirman, who goes by one name. <\/p>\n
However, in the road map for sustainable city by 2020, the requirements will be improved by including clean, green and healthy, low ecological footprint, low energy intensity, 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) implementation, energy, water and food resilience, and adaptive towards climate change.<\/p>\n
For metropolitan city category, Surabaya of East Java earned Adipura Kencana, the highest award given for its consistency in making the city clean. Followed by Tangerang of West Java, and Palembang of South Sumatra. Meanwhile, Semarang of Central Java and Medan of North Sumatra received Adipura award for this year. <\/p>\n
For big city category, Adipura Kencana were given to Malang (East Java) and Balikpapan (East Kalimantan), meanwhile Adipura were awarded to Denpasar (Bali), Pekanbaru (Riau), and Manado (South Sulawesi).
