Jakarta, Ekuatorial<\/strong> – Greenpeace Indonesia and Oil Palm Farmers Union committed on Wednesday (10\/11) to achieve zero deforestation for palm oil industry, in Jakarta. <\/p>\n

“Greenpeace has been encouraging for zero deforestation in forestry sector meanwhile Oil Palm Farmers Union (SPKS) also have the same commitment. So, we just combine those commitments and set up a joint strategy for oil palm sustainable management, said Ahmad Saleh Suhada, Forest Solution Coordinator of Greenpeace Indonesia adding that the commitment was important for the sustainability of oil palm industry and will have positive impact for the environment. <\/p>\n

Furthermore, Suhada said that increasing productivity without land expansion was the main strategy in the commitment. He cited that even without land expansion, productivity can increase to 36 million tons per hectare per year. Other strategy,he said, was to map out priorities, including organic fertilizers development and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. <\/p>\n

“They all require training for oil palm farmers on technical issues, starting from planting, fertilizers, until harvesting. So, it will be more effective, efficient, and increase productivity,” he added. <\/p>\n

Mansuetus Darto Alsyhanu, coordinator of SPKS, agreed the commitment will be able to increase productivity, increase capacity, and institution. Alsyahnu said three more important strategies, including legal standing for land ownership, Free and Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) related to land use, and commitment not to open forests and peatlands.
