Burmeso, Jubi \u2013 Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) is having difficulties in managing and monitoring its vast conservation areas, as stated by head of technical division of Papua BBKSDA, Christian Mambor, in Burmeso, capital city of Mamberamo Raya, on Saturday (8\/11). <\/em><\/p>\t\t

“Papua’s forest areas cover at least 31.5 million hectares or 24 percent of total forest in Indonesia. Around 21 percent of the total conservation area in Indonesia or 4.4 million hectares is here in Papua,” said Mambor, while presenting his material on Conservation Area Management in Papua and Land Use Change from Mamberamo Foja Natural Reserve to National Park in workshop and seminar held by Yali Papua (Environment Foundation) in Burmeso, capital city of Mamberamo Raya. <\/p>\n

Mambor said that Java island was managed by 15 technical units, starting from National Park Agency to Natural Resources Conservation Agency. Meanwhile, Papua with three times bigger than Java island only have three technical units with 126 employees and limited facilities. <\/p>\n

With this condition, Mambor said that it was impossible for Papua BKSDA to manage and monitor conservation areas in Papua. As a result, illegal trading on wildlife has become uncontrollable. <\/p>\n

Mamberamo Tribe head, Wempi Bilasi said that central government must pay attention to Papua BKSDA by allocating enough money and create more technical units to run conservation areas in Papua. That way, Papuan forests and its wildlife can be protected. <\/p>\n

“It is an important thing, central government can not underestimate this situation. They must realized those units in Papua with enough money. If they’re not being serious, then sooner or later Papuan forest will be completely destroyed,” he said. (Albert Yomo)<\/p>\n
