{"id":64157,"date":"2015-06-09T09:11:07","date_gmt":"2015-06-09T02:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/2015\/06\/misool-women-applies-community-based-fisheries\/"},"modified":"2015-06-09T09:11:07","modified_gmt":"2015-06-09T09:11:07","slug":"misool-women-applies-community-based-fisheries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2015\/06\/misool-women-applies-community-based-fisheries\/","title":{"rendered":"Misool women applies community based fisheries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sorong, Ekuatorial<\/strong> \u2013 Eager to learn community based <a href=\"https:\/\/ekuatorial.com\/biodiversity\/a-new-fish-species-found-in-papua\" title=\"A new fish species found in Papua\">fisheries<\/a>, women of Limalas village, East Misool District had to cross the sea to receive trainings on how to produce <em>abon ikan<\/em> or fish floss.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Koperasi Embun Pagi had to travelled to Alga\u2019e Marine and Fisheries Training Center in Makassar, South Sulawesi to learn on how to make fish floss since last April. The training was facilitated by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Raja Ampat Marine and Fisheries Agency. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all received trainings in Makassar. We still don\u2019t have oil press, so we still do it manually. That\u2019s why we cannot produce in large quantities,\u201d said Mama Rachel, a Limalas villager, who is also the spokesperson. <\/p>\n<p>Lukas Rumetna, Birds Headportfolio, Manager TNC, said that the training was meant to increase their capacity in fisheries production, also its products. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith efficient and controlled sea products which are managed by local people, it can ensure for natural sustainability,\u201d said Rumetna. <\/p>\n<p>Nugroho Arif, Communication Manager, TNC Raja Ampat, said that the management has yet to be optimized because it was only for domestic consumption considering on limited production tools. <\/p>\n<p>However, Arif said that their efforts on learning to manage their fish products can be a lesson learned for other people living in coastal areas. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is only an initial stage but the plan is that these women will share their knowledge to other villages of Misool \u2013 Kofiau,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Muhammad Ali Ulat of Sorong Fisheries and Marine Polytechnic, said that community based fisheries relied on local people to manage their own fish production in a sustainable way. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting from fishing, selling, and managing its products, all must be done by people living in coastal area so that they can receive direct economic benefits,\u201d said Ulat. <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, he said that without interference from large fishing industry, local government can easily monitor fish catch capacity of local fishermen. <strong>Niken Proboretno<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sorong, Ekuatorial \u2013 Eager to learn community based fisheries, women of Limalas village, East Misool District had to cross the sea to receive trainings on how to produce abon ikan or fish floss.
