{"id":64169,"date":"2015-06-18T11:55:10","date_gmt":"2015-06-18T04:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/2015\/06\/one-hundred-billion-rupiah-protection-zone-to-be-built-in-bukit-barisan-selatan-national-park\/"},"modified":"2015-06-18T11:55:10","modified_gmt":"2015-06-18T11:55:10","slug":"one-hundred-billion-rupiah-protection-zone-to-be-built-in-bukit-barisan-selatan-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2015\/06\/one-hundred-billion-rupiah-protection-zone-to-be-built-in-bukit-barisan-selatan-national-park\/","title":{"rendered":"One hundred billion rupiah protection zone to be built in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bandarlampung, Ekuatorial<\/strong> \u2013 To secure protected forest area, official said that an intensive protection zone or IPZ will be built at <a href=\"https:\/\/ekuatorial.com\/forests\/land-use-changes-destroy-lampungs-natural-resources\" title=\"Land use changes destroy Lampung\u2019s natural resources\">Bukit Barisan Selatan<\/a> National Park, on Wednesday (16\/6). <\/p>\n<p>The development, which is supported by Germany, covers 100,000 hectares or a third of the total park area and will cost Rp 100 billion (US$ 7.5 million). <\/p>\n<p>Timbul Batubara, head of the national park, said that the initial project will be aiming on rehabilitating the species condition and replanting. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfterwards, we will provide awareness program for local people on the importance to protect the forest as world\u2019s legacy,\u201d said Batubara. \u201cWe will encourage for people\u2019s involvement, especially those living in buffer zone to rehabilitate the forest.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, he said that the zone will be surrounded by \u2018social fence\u2019 not physical fence used in Africa for its national park. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would still want for the people [living near the forest area] to be able to make a living but still protect the forest and its biodiversity,\u201d he said adding that for physical development will take six years, starting in 2016. <\/p>\n<p>Hendrawan, director of Lampung chapter of Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi), supported the project to secure the forest area. \u201cWe agreed [on the project] based on the fact that it pushes forward social aspects. Our people are not land-greed if only suitable patterns are applied, especially those which are not threatening their lives,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>He said that government often uses repressive approach to protect forest areas. \u201cPeople usually lost the fight if they have to go head-to-head with authorities,\u201d he said adding the approach did work with zero percent encroachment but it failed to make people aware on the importance to protect the forest. <\/p>\n<p>Batubara claimed that they had managed to press encroachment rate to zero percent from ten percent in 2013. \u201cPeople were no longer built settlements in protected forest areas though we can still find coffee plantation,\u201d he added. <strong>Eni Muslihah<\/strong>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bandarlampung, Ekuatorial \u2013 To secure protected forest area, official said that an intensive protection zone or IPZ will be built at Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, on Wednesday (16\/6).
