The word then adapted to Latin <i>plasticus <\/i>or can be pressed and shaped and French <i>plastique.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/refhub.elsevier.com\/S0166-526X(16)30153-2\/sref1\">International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry<\/a>, a non-governmental organization established in 1919 to develop pure and applied chemistry, defines plastic as a general term used for polymeric contains other materials to improve performance and\/or reduce cost.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The characteristic of plastic \u2013 easy to produce, low cost, water resistant, chemical resistant, temperature and light resistant \u2013 making it ideal to replace other materials, including wood, rock, leather, metal, glass, and ceramic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today, plastic is inseparable from human activities. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/books\/characterization-and-analysis-of-microplastics\/rocha-santos\/978-0-444-63898-4\">It can be found in the packaging, food packages and home appliances, electronics, laboratory equipment, pipes, textile, automotive music instrument, computer hardware<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Scientists predicted that, up to 2015, humans have produced 8.3 billion tons of plastic and 6.3 billion of which, have turned to waste. If this continues, they predicted that humans will be producing 12 billion tons of waste or weighing similar to the 443-meter-high Empire State Building by 2050.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition, latest research on waste issues have revealed a new threat dubbed as <i>microplastic<\/i>, a plastic with the size less than five millimeter diameter, and <i>nanoplastic<\/i>, a plastic less than 100 nanometer. One millimeter equals to 1,000 micrometers or one million nanometers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Microplastic earned the title as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisegeek.com\/what-are-mermaid-tears.htm\">\u201cMermaid\u2019s tears\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a> for its size and colors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In March 2018,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orbmedia.org\/stories\/plus-plastic\">Orb Media<\/a>, an independent journalism organization, along with twelve international media, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempo.co\/read\/news\/2018\/03\/15\/310916669\/Beware-of-Microplastics-in-Your-Bottled-Mineral-Water\">Tempo<\/a> magazine, published an investigation piece called <b>Plus Plastic : Microplastics Found in Global Bottled Water<\/b>, written by Christopher Tyree and Dan Morrison that revealed microplastic contaminated bottled water.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Scientists of State University of New York in Fredonia tested 259 water samples from 11 brands of bottled water in the world. They found 93 percent of the samples contained microplastic, including several bottled water manufactures operating in Indonesia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In its report, Tempo magazine stated that researchers have tested 30 samples of Aqua brand bottled water in Jakarta, Bali and Medan, and found 382 microplastic particles per liter, in average. The highest microplastic reached 10,390 particles per liter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With the chemistry lab of University of Indonesia, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempo.co\/read\/news\/2018\/03\/15\/310916669\/Beware-of-Microplastics-in-Your-Bottled-Mineral-Water\">Tempo<\/a> conducted its own investigation on microplastics which included other brands, Le Minerale and Club. They collected samples from nine 600-milliliter bottled water, purchased in minimarkets, small kiosks and street vendors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The samples contained microplastic sizes from eleven micrometers to 247 micrometers. The smallest size was eight-millimeter or the size of blood cells.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tekno.tempo.co\/read\/906505\/hasil-riset-air-di-jakarta-terkontaminasi-mikroplastik\">Tempo<\/a> investigation also revealed that microplastics have contaminated tap water in five cities, &#8212; Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, South Tangerang, and Bekasi. Out of 21 samples, 76 percent have been contaminated by microplastic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most of the respondents consume tap water.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where does microplastic come from?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Microplastic can be divided into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0025326X11005133\">primary and secondary microplastic<\/a>. Primary microplastic is a millimeter or smaller size plastic mostly found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27213666\">toothpaste, facial cleanser, all creams, and medicines.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a> These microplastic products will be rinsed off after use.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Secondary microplastic derives from larger plastic material which can be split or cut, through physical, biological and chemical processes, into smaller sizes. The source of secondary microplastic is textile or washed clothes .<\/p>\n<p>Microplastic is not only found in the soil, oceans, rivers or other water sources but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749117307686\">also in the air<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a> as revealed in the latest research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749117307686\">Joana Correia Prata<\/a> of University of Fernando Pessoa, Portugal, who studied the particles in Paris, France.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For its small size, microplastic can enter the respiratory system and affect human health.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Primary microplastic is mostly present in cosmetics. Due to lack of knowledge, consumers buy and use cosmetics that contain microplastic, unaware that it washes away into waterways and enters their system when they drink bottled water.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsoupfoundation.org\/en\/organisation\/mission\/\">Plastic Soup Foundation<\/a>, a non-profit organization from Netherlands and United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), under a campaign dubbed as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beatthemicrobead.org\/\">\u201cBeat the Micro Bead\u201d<\/a>,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>provided a list of cosmetic products containing microplastic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They randomly run tests on cosmetic products for microplastic. However, there have yet any researches available on the impacts of microplastic to the human body.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749117307686\">Joana Correia Prata<\/a>\u2019s research on microplastic particle was a preliminary assumption on health impacts from microplastic to respiratory system. Previous research in the United States found <a href=\"http:\/\/cebp.aacrjournals.org\/content\/cebp\/7\/5\/419.full.pdf\">plastic fiber, the size of 250 micrometer, in human lungs. <\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hence, there is high potential for health impacts on humans inhaling microplastic. Prata predicted humans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749116312325\">at risk of inhaling 26 to 130 microplastic per day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, researches have revealed impacts of microplastic in the marine ecosystem, including to microbes, <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/359\/6374\/460.full\">coral reefs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0025326X15000107\">sea urchins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013935115300360\">sea shells<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep14340\">microplastic from textile found on seafood<\/a> and other fishes, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0025326X15302393\">king mackerel <\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on land, microplastic can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27726978\">earthworms <\/a>(<i>Lumbricus terrestris<\/i>).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Microplastic can enter the human body through various ways. Assessing microplastic researches, there is high potential that the material has entered the body of Indonesians. At least, those who have drank bottled water or consumed seafood.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Experts\u2019 concerns are not solely focus on health impacts but the \u201cfree-loaders\u201d that comes along with the particles of microplastic, entering the human body. Microorganism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S014111361630112X\">including disease-causing pathogens, can be carried by microplastic. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A global threat and concern<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plastic waste, namely microplastic, has become a global issue with<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chemicalwatch.com\/60737\/ngo-coalition-urges-eu-wide-ban-on-microplastics-in-cosmetics\">non-government organization coalition urging European Union <\/a>to ban cosmetics and other body treatment products containing microplastic. At the 2014 UN Environment Assembly, UNEP had agreed on <a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/17285\/K1402364.pdf\">Marine Plastic Debris and Microplastics<\/a> resolution. Indonesia supports this resolution.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2015, following the <a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/9664\/-Plastic_in_cosmetics_Are_we_polluting_the_environment_through_our_personal_care_-2015Plas.pdf\">microplastic risk on environment report<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/world-oceans-day-new-un-report-recommends-ban-microplastics\">UNEP<\/a> called for ban on cosmetics and other body treatment products that contain microplastic.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2017, more than 193 nations signed the United Nations Resolution to stop marine plastic litter. The CleanSeas campaign has received over 81,548 pledges, governments and several key players in the private sector.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the same year, the U.S. issued Microbead-Free Waters Act prohibiting the production, packaging, and distribution of cosmetic products, including tooth paste, containing rinse-off microplastic. The act was soon followed by other nations including Canada, New Zealand, and England.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sweden banned the sale of cosmetics containing microbeads which rinses off during use &#8211; that will take effect in July 2018. Other countries, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Norway, will follow suit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Large size plastic waste and microplastic will continue to be washed away to the oceans, rivers, and freshwater. UNEP has determined that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/biodegradable-plastics-are-not-answer-reducing-marine-litter-says-un\">biodegradable plastic is not the solution<\/a> to tackle marine and terrestrial plastic waste.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Indonesia jumped into the wagon. The government launched a program that mandates stores to charge for plastic bags. But it was short-lived due to mounting pressure from retail companies and consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The 2008 Law on Waste Management stipulates producers to manage their non-degradable packaging or products. This includes retracting all packages from the market to be recycled or reused. However, the 2008 Law on Waste Management does not specifically regulate plastic waste management.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the 2012 Presidential Regulation on Household Waste and Household Like Waste Management, a derivative of the 2008 Law on Waste Management, underlines that producers are stipulated to retract their product waste and packaging for recycle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Central and regional government must implement the Waste Management Law and its derivatives. To reduce waste, the policy of household waste contribution must be changed. It should be calculated based on the amount of waste from a household, giving it an incentive to reduce its waste.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the law, eliminating products that have become part of our routine, that contain \u2018invisible\u2019 plastic, is a great challenge.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is high time for companies producing and selling plastic packaged products to enforce its responsibility in managing its waste, including retracting their used packaging.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers with better awareness can resend used packages back to the producers.
