{"id":89407,"date":"2022-01-27T00:46:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T17:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/?p=89407"},"modified":"2022-01-28T00:30:51","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T17:30:51","slug":"safety-concerns-pay-gap-among-key-findings-in-ejn-gender-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2022\/01\/safety-concerns-pay-gap-among-key-findings-in-ejn-gender-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety concerns, pay gap, among key findings in EJN gender research"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThis story also appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/earthjournalism.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Earth Journalism Network<\/a>\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">In December 2020, Internews&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/earthjournalism.net\">Earth Journalism Network<\/a> (EJN), a global network of environmental journalists network and implementer of media development activities, began a research project to determine how journalists in Asia who have received grant support and mentorship from EJN include women in their&nbsp;reporting, or&nbsp;fail to do so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">EJN worked with researchers in four countries \u2013 Pakistan, India, Indonesia and the Philippines&nbsp;\u2013 to assess how reporters think about gender&nbsp;and what&nbsp;kind of&nbsp;barriers they face when seeking to include women\u2019s voices in their stories. Further, how do social and cultural views of women create challenges to inclusion?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Researchers conducted dozens of interviews with journalists and experts about the&nbsp;barriers&nbsp;women face, both as journalists and as sources for the media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">A few of the report\u2019s key findings:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Women are often seen as \u201cless credible\u201d sources than men.&nbsp;<\/li><li>When pressed for time, journalists often don\u2019t feel they can put in the effort to seek out new sources, returning to the same male-dominated lists.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Women journalists face safety concerns that can make field reporting more challenging.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Men still hold most leadership positions in newsrooms, leading to less awareness of the absence of women\u2019s voices and\/or a lack of support for reporters seeking to include women more.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>A pay gap remains between men and women journalists.&nbsp;<\/li><li>There are often fewer prominent women experts, particularly in environmental fields or in high-level government positions.&nbsp;<\/li><li>One common thread through all four countries was the role social and cultural norms play in terms of where women can go and who they can speak to, both as journalists and as sources.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cover_1.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"EJN\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">EJN<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">EJN\u2019s \u201cWhere are the Women?\u201d report discusses the\u00a0challenges\u00a0women face as journalists and sources in Asia.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">A&nbsp;related&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwmf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2020.11.19-The-Missing-Perspectives-of-Women-in-News-EXEC-SUMMARY-FINAL.pdf\">report<\/a>&nbsp;on women\u2019s under-representation in&nbsp;the&nbsp;media, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation&nbsp;in 2020,&nbsp;studied the news landscape in&nbsp;six countries and concluded:&nbsp;\u201cNews is produced mainly by men, featuring more men and is consumed by more men.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">In India,&nbsp;EJN\u2019s researchers learned from journalists&nbsp;how difficult it can be to find women experts in certain niche fields because women have historically been excluded from higher education.&nbsp;Other interviewees&nbsp;mentioned&nbsp;that women experts often must ask a supervisor for permission to speak and&nbsp;that traditional or generational wisdom, much of which is held by women, is not considered expertise.&nbsp;Another Indian interviewee,&nbsp;freelance journalist Aparna Karthikeyan, summed it up well: \u201cI can\u2019t sit in a bar like a man, I can\u2019t walk into a panchayat [local government] meeting like a man.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">The Gates\u2019 Foundation\u2019s \u201cMissing Perspectives of Women in News\u201d found only&nbsp;14% of sources quoted in online news stories in India were women.&nbsp;(In the United Kingdom, which&nbsp;was the most gender inclusive of the six countries&nbsp;they&nbsp;considered, it was just 29%.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">EJN\u2019s report revealed journalists in Indonesia shared similar&nbsp;difficulties. Journalists struggle to find&nbsp;women leaders or experts to interview&nbsp;when reporting on forestry or mining issues in remote regions of the country.&nbsp;When they do interview women, it\u2019s often as victims&nbsp;or members of affected&nbsp;communities, rather than as expert sources. One journalist, Tessa&nbsp;Toumbourou,&nbsp;highlighted&nbsp;the same&nbsp;challenge&nbsp;her Indian peers&nbsp;faced:&nbsp;\u201cI know that women in the villages have a lot of experience and wisdom when it comes to dealing with environmental issues \u2026 However, their voices are not heard.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Women-journalists-in-Tamil-Nadu_India.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"EJN\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">EJN<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">Women journalists, participating in an EJN workshop, interview local community members in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">In Pakistan, this challenge&nbsp;was found to come into&nbsp;play as well. Two journalists, both men,&nbsp;reported to EJN&nbsp;that they find it difficult to&nbsp;interview&nbsp;women in remote areas of the country because of societal norms&nbsp;that discourage&nbsp;women&nbsp;from&nbsp;speaking to strangers.&nbsp;In both Hindu and Muslim communities in the country, women observe purdah \u2013 seclusion from strangers and\/or men \u2013 in different ways. Some may cover&nbsp;up&nbsp;entirely around strangers of any gender,&nbsp;while others may show their faces to&nbsp;unknown&nbsp;women but not men. Navigating these differences, especially when on deadline, can be a&nbsp;considerable&nbsp;challenge.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">In&nbsp;the Philippines, the journalists interviewed&nbsp;once again&nbsp;cited difficulties&nbsp;finding women experts as a major&nbsp;obstacle&nbsp;to including more women sources in their stories. One journalist, Leilani Chavez, noted that men tend to respond quicker to her interview requests than women: \u201cWomen sources have more clarifications and considerations before they agree to interviews. They want to make sure they are the right person to be quoted.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Overall,&nbsp;the report&nbsp;reiterates&nbsp;that more work needs to be&nbsp;done&nbsp;to advance gender equality in the media&nbsp;and&nbsp;presents a dozen recommendations for how EJN and other organizations can support journalists in making their work more gender balanced. Here are just a few:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Create&nbsp;databases of women experts by country and field.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Support gender sensitivity and awareness trainings for journalists and editors to increase the number of women quoted and the number of high-ranking women journalists in newsrooms.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Support media engagement trainings that focus on ways to make women sources feel more comfortable interacting with journalists.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Train journalists and media outlets on the \u2018expertise gap,\u2019&nbsp;to recognize the value of&nbsp;traditional and\/or generational wisdom&nbsp;as&nbsp;a form of legitimate expertise.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">The findings expand upon a pilot study EJN conducted as part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5d13c69287972d0001611cb6\/t\/5e8b7b61bc35c45c4300ed38\/1586199410706\/Reflect-Reality_Handbook.pdf\">Reflect Reality<\/a>, a methodology Internews launched in 2019 to increase women\u2019s visibility in the news media.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">EJN&nbsp;will&nbsp;continue&nbsp;to support journalists in our network&nbsp;to include more women\u2019s voices in their reporting and&nbsp;expand our efforts to help&nbsp;women journalists&nbsp;stay safe and&nbsp;advance in&nbsp;their careers despite the
