{"id":91745,"date":"2022-10-29T08:25:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-29T01:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/?p=91745"},"modified":"2022-12-01T05:20:27","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T22:20:27","slug":"cattle-ranching-may-threaten-karts-ecosystem-water-resources-in-aru-indonesia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2022\/10\/cattle-ranching-may-threaten-karts-ecosystem-water-resources-in-aru-indonesia\/","title":{"rendered":"Cattle ranching may threaten karts ecosystem, water resources in Aru, Indonesia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our reporting collaboration team, together with Forest Watch Indonesia researcher Aziz Fardhani Jaya, a member of the Indonesia Speleological Society, and Sammy Kamsy, a religious leader from Popjetur village, explored the karst landscape of Trangan, which at its highest point lies just 10 meters above sea level.<\/p>\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThis story also appeared in Mongabay Indonesia\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<p>Sammy said that the plan for cattle ranching on Trangan was worrying, as it would potentially threaten the island\u2019s freshwater resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aziz explained that karst landscapes are found in limestone areas that are the result of sedimentation from shells formed around 15 to 23 million years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research conducted by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fwi.or.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/PORTRAIT-OF-THE-ARU-ISLAND.pdf\"><u>FWI and Lawalata IPB<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2016 identified some 37 caves in the Aru Islands. \u201cAnd that is not yet all of them because of the limited time for exploration and difficult access [to identify them],\u201d Azis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kokoyar cave on Kobror Island, for example, has corridors with stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, pillars, and flow stones which all have water dripping down from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aziz said that many of the caves also have subterranean rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"706\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Mongabay_Peta-sebaran-Air.jpg?resize=433%2C706&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Peta sebaran mata air di Pulau Trangan \" class=\"wp-image-91754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Mongabay_Peta-sebaran-Air.jpg?w=433&amp;ssl=1 433w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Mongabay_Peta-sebaran-Air.jpg?resize=184%2C300&amp;ssl=1 184w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Mongabay_Peta-sebaran-Air.jpg?resize=400%2C652&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><figcaption>Freshwater resources on Trangan Island, based on research from Forest Watch Indonesia and Lawalata IPB (2016). Credit: Mongabay Indonesia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Trangan, the caves have long, bifurcated corridors but also few speleothems, such as stalactites and stalagmites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis difference is maybe due to the type of stone structure and the ecosystem above it,\u201d said Azis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its water also follows an ebb and flow pattern meaning that this karst ecosystem is linked to the upstream areas of nearby rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKarst is indeed a porous stone and acts like a sponge. It absorbs water. In here the water is salty or brackish, when it reaches the pond it already has become freshwater,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karst, he added, helps to safeguard the fresh water supply. Caves functions as natural drainage channels and the water that seeps from their walls also form subterranean rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Azis said that besides the karst landscape, forests and coastal mangroves were also very important in maintaining a supply of fresh water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA big issue in South Aru is the availability of water,\u201d said Mufti Barri, Executive Director of Forest Watch Indonesia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Mongabay_caves-Marfefen-River.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Forest Watch Indonesia\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">Forest Watch Indonesia<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">In addition to important water resources, the cave rivers in the upper reaches of the Marfenfen River offer public transportation access.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Mongabay-Indonesia_warga-di-Telaga-Kongan.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Forest Watch Indonesia\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">Forest Watch Indonesia<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">The Kongan Pond is used by bathers and as a source for fresh water for the surrounding community.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Villages in Aru depend on on a number of fresh water sources, including springs, wells as well as rainwater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut wells and springs are very dependent on the conditions of their environment,\u201d said Mufti who is better known as Ode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1470160X18304163\">&nbsp;<u>sciencedirect.com<\/u><\/a>, showed that livestock farming in karst ecosystems, such as on the Aru Islands, can lead to the pollution of karst aquifers by microbes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar study conducted in the karst ecosystems southeast&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticsholar.org\/paper\/AGRICULTURAL-LAND-USE-IMPACTS-ON-BACTERIAL-WATER-IN-BOYER-Pasquarell\/84213322901566db36de64132a557a070fbf523c\"><u>West Virginia, USA&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;showed that karst springs near livestock farms were intensively contaminated by fecal bacteria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf animal feces from large-scale cattle ranching accumulate and get carried away by the water, they will also seep into the ground and increase the presence of&nbsp;<em>E. coli&nbsp;<\/em>bacteria and other [pathogens],\u201d said Petrasa Wacana, a researcher who specializes in karst ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The karst landscape, he added, is also home to the traditional populations of Aru.
