For them, land is not only an economic source but an inseparable part of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ignoring these relationships, including encouraging cattle ranching on customary lands, will result in damage to local livelihoods, he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mama Ribka Siarukin said her ancestors were the ones who motivated her to fight to reject the cattle farming companies in Popjetur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy be afraid? We have a life here. If we die, bury me here, in front of my house,\u201d Ribka said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that she rejected the presence of the cattle ranching because she did not want to suffer like her predecessors who had to fight to defend their land against Dutch colonialism all those many years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Mama-Ribka-Siarukin-56-Perempuan-Popjetur-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Christ Belseran\/Mongabay Indonesia\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">Christ Belseran\/Mongabay Indonesia<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">Mama Ribke Siarukin, one of the indigenous women in the Popjetur who strongly oppose to cattle ranhing in her village.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Mia&nbsp;Siscawati, an anthropologist who also heads the Gender Study Program of the University of Indonesia, said that traditional people\u2019s loss of access to natural resources due to interests like cattle ranching or plantations can have serious repercussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can sever their links to their living space and, therefore, their identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Living space, for customary societies, includes not only the land but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2022\/10\/cattle-ranching-may-threaten-karts-ecosystem-water-resources-in-aru-indonesia\/\">entire ecosystems<\/a> \u2013 including forests, fields, freshwater sources, the coasts, the ocean\u2013 with functions that are economic, ecological, social, cultural and political.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mia took the specific example of impacts on women in these Indigenous groups who usually possess knowledge on food and medicine. Such knowledge, she said, was not only useful for the conservation of nature, but also as a bargaining tool in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women are the ones who know how to identify, use, regenerate and maintain plants with medicinal, food or spiritual and symbolic value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the forests or their land are converted for other functions such as cattle ranching, the ecosystem that has so far supported them could disappear<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLosing access and control of natural resources is not an insignificant impact.
