Young people have a crucial role in voicing their concerns about water issues. Especially at a time when many areas are facing drought and the threat of a clean water crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water crisis was discussed at the 1st Stakeholder Consultation Meeting (SCM) in Jakarta last February. The 2nd SCM was held in Badung, Bali on October 12-13, 2023. The Bali event was attended by stakeholders from 73 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A member of the International Forestry Students Association Local Committee<\/a> (IFSA LC), Fauzia Haini was one of the participants in the activity organized by the World Water Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haini, also a student at the Forestry and Environment faculty of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) represented young people who are participating in voicing concerns and playing a role in tackling water issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This activity provides a lot of knowledge and an overview of how to make decisions later,” Haini explained, quoted on Tuesday (24\/10\/2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Several things are discussed and we are facilitated to think critically. The International Secretariat for Water (ISW) supports us to be at the forefront and involved in political activities, clean water supply and sanitation, water management, and various other things,” said Haini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this 2nd SCM – 10th World Water Forum (WWF), Haini said, she gained experience through direct discussions with people from various countries as well as building relationships with various groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As a forestry student who rarely deals with water issues, I gained a lot of knowledge. In various discussion opportunities, I pointed out that not only humans need water but nature and wildlife as well,” said Haini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works and Housing said the event discussed ‘water justice’ globally. This included water management on small islands and access to clean water for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We mapped the linkages between subthemes, regions, and the three processes, planned further actions, and designed the final outcome for the forum, as well as designed follow-up [actions] afterwards,” Basuki said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting resulted in commitments and action plans on global water issues. These commitments will be further discussed at the next WWF meeting in May 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean water crisis in West Java<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

West Java is one of Indonesia’s provinces experiencing the prolonged dry season. One of the effects is the clean water crisis. The West Java administration said it continues to increase the supply of clean water to districts and cities to reduce the impact of drought due to El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on data from the West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), from January – October 13, 2023, drought-affected areas have reached 24 districts and cities. To date, drought has affected 302,665 households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To distribute clean water, West Java BPBD cooperates with related city and district level agencies such as the redcross and drinking water companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new area experiencing water shortages is Bekasi City. In Indonesia, 23 districts have already experienced clean water shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 23 districts include Bogor City and district, Bekasi, Karawang, Sukabumi City and district, West Bandung, Depok, Purwakarta, Indramayu, Subang, and Badung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, there are also 23 districts affected by forest and land fires, in addition to drought. Agriculture land warped by fire reached 887.7 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The West Java BPBD continues to coordinate with regional BPBDs and related agencies to provide data and inform them of efforts in dealing with forest and land fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
