{"id":97184,"date":"2023-12-11T09:57:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T02:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/?p=97184"},"modified":"2023-12-07T16:49:54","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T09:49:54","slug":"climate-crisis-to-cause-mass-bleaching-of-indonesian-coral-areas-by-2044","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2023\/12\/climate-crisis-to-cause-mass-bleaching-of-indonesian-coral-areas-by-2044\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate crisis to cause mass bleaching of Indonesian coral areas by 2044"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sukding, the head of Gili Air Village in the Gili Matra National Marine Conservation Area in West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, has vivid childhood memories of diving in the ocean near his village and playing with fish among the reefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1980s, Sukding recalls, the area had abundant coral reefs, serving as a home to fish, lobsters, hawksbill turtles and white reef sharks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe entire coastline of this island (Gili Air) was packed with coral reefs,\u201d Sukding told <em>The Conversation<\/em> in August, when we travelled more than 1,100 kilometres from Jakarta by plane and boat to meet Gili communities and see the reefs up close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four decades later, the situation has changed completely. The coral reefs in Gili Matra \u2013 short for three Gili islands, Gili Meno, Gili Air, and Gili Trawangan \u2014 are nearly wiped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from Indonesia\u2019s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in 2022 stated that only about <a href=\"https:\/\/ejournal2.undip.ac.id\/index.php\/jkt\/article\/view\/17134\">247 hectares<\/a> or approximately 10% of the total area of coral ecosystems in Gili survives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rising sea temperatures are the main reason behind the destruction. The area has experienced several extreme over the past 15 years, resulting in massive coral bleaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1998, extreme heat from El Ni\u00f1o decimated the coral reefs. The reefs used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/270893933_Promoting_recruitment_of_scieractinian_corals_using_artificial_substrate_in_the_Gill_Indah_Lombok_Barat_Indonesia?channel=doi&amp;linkId=54b85a790cf2c27adc48afc8&amp;showFulltext=true\">cover 60-80% of the oceans\u2019 floor<\/a> in Gili Matra. Subsequent bleaching in <a href=\"https:\/\/jfmr.ub.ac.id\/index.php\/jfmr\/article\/view\/30\">2010 and 2016<\/a> exacerbated coral damage in Gili Matra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X22004754#bib74\">Research<\/a> published earlier this year, led by University of Glasgow marine ecologist Laurence De Clippele, indicates Gili Matra\u2019s coral ecosystem is expected to face annual severe bleaching due to climate change from 2026 due to rising sea temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research predicts Gili Matra will be among 12 of Indonesia\u2019s marine protected areas where reefs will bleach every year by 2030. By 2044, they expect that to rise to reefs across 99 \u2013 or more than half \u2013 of Indonesia\u2019s marine protected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src='https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/15510186\/embed' title='Interactive or visual content' class='flourish-embed-iframe' frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='width:100%;height:600px;' sandbox='allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation'><\/iframe><div style='width:100%!;margin-top:4px!important;text-align:right!important;'><a class='flourish-credit' href='https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/15510186\/?utm_source=embed&#038;utm_campaign=visualisation\/15510186' target='_top' style='text-decoration:none!important' rel=\"noopener\"><img alt='Made with Flourish' src='https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/made_with_flourish.svg' style='width:105px!important;height:16px!important;border:none!important;margin:0!important;'> <\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By around 2075, they expect to see annual bleaching affecting all 161 of Indonesia\u2019s marine protected areas that are home to coral reefs, as the map above shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of areas set to be affected first include Selat Pantar \u2013 Alor Marine Conservation Area in East Nusa Tenggara province, where annual bleaching is expected to starts from 2026, and Waigeo Nature Reserve in Raja Ampat, West Papua, starting from 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The De Clippele study, in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund Indonesia and the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, emphasizes the importance of managing conservation areas in Indonesia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also incorporates the risk of rising sea temperatures as one of its defining factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indonesian reefs are globally significant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesia is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/research\/reefs-risk-revisited-coral-triangle\">largest homes<\/a> for global coral reefs, accounting for 16% of the world\u2019s total reef area. Its reefs are also known for their high coral diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/files.cmcc.it\/g20climaterisks\/Indonesia.pdf\">G20 Climate Risk Atlas<\/a> report by the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, by the year 2050, Indonesia\u2019s average sea temperature is expected to increase by approximately 1.1\u00b0 to 1.5\u00b0C above the average temperature recorded between 1950 and 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will become a significant impediment to the Indonesia government\u2019s goal to expand conservation areas from 28.9 million hectares <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mongabay.co.id\/2023\/03\/21\/peta-jalan-kawasan-konservasi-perairan-indonesia-2045-harus-30-persen\/\">to nearly 100 million hectares by 2045<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal of our research is to provide knowledge on which areas require more support,\u201d De Clippele told <em>The Conversation Indonesia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How bleaching can kill coral and affect marine life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0025326X03000377\">Coral bleaching<\/a> occurs when algae known as zooxanthellae detach from the coral\u2019s surface. Consequently, the coral becomes stressed, as it doesn\u2019t receive enough nutrients such as glucose, amino acids, and glycerol from the algae, causing the coral to bleach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When coral bleaches, they lose their vibrant colour and turn white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Ever Footage: Watch Coral Bleaching Happen Before Your Eyes | National Geographic\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bFdPmiwZzVE?start=9&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The video showcasing the coral bleaching process, documented by National Geographic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of its triggers is when the sea temperature increases to about 1-1.5\u00b0C above average temperatures for an extended period \u2014 about a month. Coral can also turn white because of pollution, too much freshwater, or too much sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bleached coral can disrupt the food chain in ecosystems. Some coral-eating fish species, like parrotfish, will lose their food source. Additionally, other species, such as lobsters and turtles, may migrate because they lose their shelter and habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Indonesian conservation areas, including Gili Matra, are predominantly inhabited by a coral genus called Acropora. Despite being fast-growing corals, they are vulnerable to environmental changes like rising sea temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis species is considered vulnerable to heat. When there\u2019s bleaching, they may die,\u201d says Imam Bachtiar, a coral reef expert from the University of Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This vulnerability has been evident. In June, Cakra Adiwijaya, a researcher from a local marine research organisation, <em>Yayasan Gili Matra Bersama<\/em>, discovered that coral reefs at one diving spot in Gili Air died due to <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00338-007-0317-8\">skeletal eroding band disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Foto-karang-yang-terkena-penyakit-di-lokasi-penumbuhan-karang-Han-Reef-Gili-Air-Lombok-pada-Mei-2023_foto-oleh-Cakra-Yayasan-Gili-Matra-Bersama.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Cakra Adiwijaya\/Yayasan Gili Matra Bersama\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">Cakra Adiwijaya\/Yayasan Gili Matra Bersama<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">A coral afflicted with the skeletal eroding band disease at the coral restoration site in Gili Air, Lombok, in May 2023.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The symptom includes the bleaching of the corals followed by black spots on their surface \u2014 believed to be a result of heat stress. At that time, according to Adiwijaya, the monthly average sea temperature in the waters of Gili Matra reached 30\u00b0C or higher than the average temperature of around 28\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imam Bachtiar stated that De Clippele research and the team\u2019s findings significantly affect managing marine conservation areas. These areas \u2013 managed by national or regional governments \u2013 were supposed to serve as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320723001490\">\u2018last line of defence\u2019<\/a> for vital marine ecosystems like coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds, protecting them from the busy shipping routes and industrial fishing activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bachtiar urges the Ministry to consider the De Clippele research seriously. This is because coral reefs serve as habitats for numerous marine organisms, including Vermiculated spinefoot fish, white-tip reef sharks, green sea turtles, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The destruction of coral reefs will also affect local livelihoods, considering that 60% of Indonesia\u2019s population <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/323771740_A_Regional_Perspective_on_Urbanization_and_Climate-Related_Disasters_in_the_Northern_Coastal_Region_of_Central_Java_Indonesia\">resides in coastal areas<\/a> and many depend on healthy coral ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2023\/07\/mangroves-and-coastal-communities-at-risk-in-jambis-east-coast\/\">Mangroves and coastal communities at risk in Jambi&#8217;s east coast<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protecting resilient coral reefs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>De Clippelle\u2019s study serves as a warning for the sustainability of Indonesia\u2019s coral reefs in conservation areas. However, some things can be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study predicted that 73 of Indonesia\u2019s marine protected areas that are not expected to bleach annually until after 2044 could serve as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/j.1365-2486.1996.tb00063.x\">\u201cthermal refugia\u201d<\/a> \u2013 areas providing some refuge from the warming oceans. These refuge areas could include the Momparang Islands Marine Conservation Area in Bangka Belitung province and the Pangumbahan Coastal Turtle Sanctuary in Sukabumi, West Java province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to De Clippele\u2019s study, Muhammad Erdi Lazuardi, the National Coordinator for Marine Science and Knowledge Management at WWF Indonesia, also points out that Indonesia has 16 coral ecosystem areas with high resilience to sea warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/conl.12587\">a 2018 study<\/a> by researchers from the University of Queensland, Australia, led by Ove Hoegh-Guldberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most resilient coral ecosystems is located within the Selat Pantar &#8211; Alor Marine Conservation Area, in East Nusa Tenggara province, eastern Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoegh-Guldberg\u2019s study highlighted that this resilience was due to the coral reefs\u2019 ability to endure ocean warming, thanks to their natural environment. The area has fewer storms and faces minimal risk of future sea temperature increases, allowing coral larvae to spread and thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Alor Conservation Area is situated in a region with a high resilience of coral reefs, so if coral bleaching occurs in the future, it is expected to recover naturally,\u201d says Erdi, one of the authors in Hoegh-Guldberg\u2019s study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Erdi warns that bleached-resilience corals will struggle to recover if the surrounding conditions are not supportive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if there are practices of irresponsible fishing using bombs and potassium, polluted water, or excessive tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/area-karang-sehat-gili-matra-2.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Robby Irfany Maqoma\/TCID\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">Robby Irfany Maqoma\/TCID<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">Healthy coral area within the Gili Matra National Marine Conservation Area.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>He suggests enforcing patrols and monitoring conservation areas by government and local communities, restoring damaged corals, and promoting sustainable fishing and tourism activities. Currently, tracking in conservation areas aims to deter destructive fishing, large ships and other suspicious activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erdi also views the Indonesian government\u2019s initiative to map the capacity of tourism within the conservation areas as crucial. It could help ensure that human activities such as mass tourism do not threaten coral ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coastal resources and environmental management researcher at Bogor Agricultural University, Yonvitner, pointed out that the root cause of coral bleaching in the sea is increasing human activity on land, such as cutting down forests that release greenhouse gases. Therefore, to combat coral bleaching, taking action to curb environmental degradation and carbon dioxide emissions is crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReducing emissions is important, not just by reducing deforestation, but also by cutting down on carbon-based energy use,\u201d Yonvitner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekuatorial.com\/en\/2023\/07\/duano-fishers-struggle-with-climate-and-mangrove-woes\/\">Duano fishers struggle with climate and mangrove woes<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Indonesia\u2019s government is responding<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Head of the Sub-Directorate for Conservation Area Planning at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Amehr Hakim, told <em>The Conversation<\/em> in September they had yet to read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X22004754#bib74\">De Clippelle\u2019s research<\/a>, which was published in February 2023. However, they already know about the climate crisis and how it affects coral reefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anticipating the deteriorating coral ecosystems, Amehr said the ministry is considering restricting human activities within conservation areas. The goal is to prevent corals from stressing out during the bleaching so they have a chance to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Marine Affairs is experimenting with several strategies. One of them has been identifying resilient coral ecosystems across Indonesia with the National Research and Innovation Agency (known as BRIN in Indonesian), which it published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/323319007_Indeks_Kesehatan_Terumbu_Karang\">in 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amehr said that research was the basis for the ministry in designating new marine conservation areas. \u201cBRIN [the agency] has identified several areas in Indonesia with high resilience, such as in Anambas [in western Indonesia],\u201d Amehr said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balancing tourism and conservation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another effort involves limiting the number of tourists within conservation areas. This policy is being discussed in the grand plan for the Gili Matra National Marine Conservation Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the peak season, Gili Matra receives thousands of daily tourists, many of whom engage in activities like diving and snorkelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gili Matra\u2019s manager, Martanina, said this number is too many, though she didn\u2019t specify how many tourists the conservation area should ideally accommodate each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visitor\u2019s restrictions are necessary to prevent further damage to the coral reefs in Gili Matra. However, implementing these measures is challenging as they could impact the local economy, especially since Gili Matra is an important tourist destination that contributes <a href=\"https:\/\/news.republika.co.id\/berita\/pa5nf6370\/pariwisata-gili-sumbang-45-persen-pad-lombok-utara\">45% of the revenue<\/a> to North Lombok Regency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there is a need for extensive public awareness campaigns. As Amehr puts it, \u201cThe choice is between allowing the ecosystem to deteriorate or making continuous efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ekuatorial-custom-image-block vue-component image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-block-container\"><div class=\"image-section\"><div class=\"callout-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ekuatorial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/pelaku-restorasi-yayasan-gili-matra-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Yayasan Gili Matra Bersama\" class=\"credited-image\" \/><div class=\"image-info-wrapper\"><span class=\"dashicons dashicons-camera-alt image-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"image-meta\">Yayasan Gili Matra Bersama<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"text-section\"><span class=\"callout-title image-description\">Conservation staff at the Yayasan Gili Matra Bersama<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Despite the challenges, the local community supports the plan for restrictions. In fact, according to the Head of Gili Air Village, Sukding, it was the residents who put forward the idea of limiting visitor numbers at the end of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says locals are also concerned about the long-term environmental impact of too many tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re worried about tourists. They come for a holiday and end up posing a threat to the sea, like using sunscreen with loads of harmful chemicals. That\u2019s bad for the fish and coral,\u201d Sukding said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Sukding, the community suggested online registration for tourists before entering the Gili Matra area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Sukding said the community proposed the Gili Matra manager create a schedule and follow a quota system for underwater tourism, like snorkelling and diving. Tourists should be dispersed across various locations, instead of being concentrated in the same diving or snorkelling spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to preventing damage to the coral ecosystem, Sukding believes this proposal will bring more fairness in the number of visitors allocated among the three islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere have been many complaints from friends in Gili Meno because most visitors exploit the spots near them, but the tourists don\u2019t visit Gili Meno,\u201d Sukding said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This article is the first part of an in-depth science-based reporting series and was first published by <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/more-than-half-of-indonesias-protected-coral-areas-look-set-to-suffer-severe-bleaching-every-year-by-2044-researchers-warn-215726\">The Conversation<\/a> on 22 November 2023.
