Yogyakarta mapped out dry-season-affected areas

Yogyakarta, Kabarkota.com – The Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) mapped out 24 sub-districts affected with water crisis as the result of drought.

Head of the agency Gatot Saptadi said that 24 sub-districts comprised of 15 sub-districts in Gunung Kidul, four sub-districts in Bantul, four sub-districts in Kulon Progo and one in Sleman.

“For Yogjakarta, the water supply from PAM, the city-owned water operator, is still enough,” said Gatot to Kabarkota.com at his office, on Monday, September, 29.

Generally, he added that water crisis occurred in plural areas, especially in countryside. But, that depends on natural water sources as well as the lack of technology access.

Gatot said that they have been pumping and installing pipes to handle water crisis. However, there were still obstacles in some areas, particularly on getting the fuel to generate them.

In addition, he said, Governor and head of districts announced the Alert Status since September, 15 for three months . “The status is set to optimize the potential equipment and funding that exists in all sectors,” he said.

For short-term, BPBD has done water dropping regularly. While the medium-term, they are pumping from nearest water sources in one area. And, for long-term, BPBD will seek new springs and build retention basin. Sutriyati
