Aceh Representatives : funding to transfer elephant is available at City District

Elephant and human conflict reached five people casualties and one injured between 2014 – 2015 in Central Aceh.

Secretary of Commission II, which oversees economy, natural resources and environment, at Aceh House of Representatives, H. Muhammad Amru, said that lack of fund can not be used as the reason to stall moving elephant to its habitat as the funding was available at city district.

“The fund is also available at district because special autonomy fund usually directly transferred from central [government]. So, it does not make any sense for lack of fund to become the reason to stall moving these elephants,” said H Muhammad Amru to ATJEHPOST.CO, Monday, 2 February 2015.

H Amru was referring to recent elephant attack which had killed farmer of Babul Rahmah of Southeast Aceh district. The attacks also killed four people in Pintu Rime Gayo of Bener Meriah district.

Furthermore, H Amru said that Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) responsible to dealing with man-elephant conflicts should have worked harder as it was part of their job.

“BKSDA also can not make lack of funding as the reason because man-animal conflict is their job,” said Aceh party politician.

H Amru denied that funding related to elephant-man conflict came only from Aceh government as it should be a shared responsibility between central, province, and city district governments.

Elephant and man conflict in Central Aceh between 2014-15 had reached five people killed and one injured. Four man killed M Syarief (Aman Sur), Firmansyah, Hasan Basri and Hasnah are from Bener Meriah. Meanwhile, the fifth victim, Usman was a chocolate farmer of Kampung Baru, Southeast Aceh district. One injured, Sudirman, came from Bener Meriah. []
