Drought hit 39 villages in Wonogiri, Central Java

Wonogiri, Ekuatorial – Wonogiri Disaster Management Agency gave out drought early warnings for 39 villages in eight sub-districts, — Giritontro, Pracimantoro, Paranggupito, Manyaran, Eromoko, Nguntoronadi, Giriwoyo and Selogiri – for this year.

“We have mapped out areas prone to drought in Wonogiri and added one more [area], which is Selogiri as it was also hit by long dry season last year,” said Bambang Haryanto, head of Wonogiri Disaster Management Agency.

Haryanto added that Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG had also issued warning on drought for Wonogiri, especially southern part of Surakarta residency.

Furthermore, he said that Pracimantoro would be the hardest hit with drought.

“At least nine villages in Pracimantoro are prone to drought. One of them is Gambirmanis where they have already started to experience water scarcity,” he said referring to seven wells providing them with clean water were depleting.

Warsito, chief of Pracimantoro said that eight out of the total 13 wells have dried because of lack rain.

“This long dry season made our water sources depleting. Only few wells provide water,” he said adding that 4,000 villagers were threatened due to this dry season. Bramantyo
