Govt to conduct census on Bornean orangutan

Palangka Raya, Ekuatorial – Following increasing conflicts between human and orangutan, officials and NGOs were planning to conduct census on its population, habitat, and threat for Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii or Bornean orangutan.

Nandang Prinadi, chief of Central Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation agency, underlined the importance for government agencies and NGOs focusing on orangutan protection to share and renew latest information and data on orangutan sub-species Morio.

“The population data, in-situ or ex-situ, will be handed over to the government who is authorized to protect endangered orangutan,” said Prinadi.

Bambang Dahono Adji, director of Biodiversity Conservation, of Ministry of Environment and Forestry, said that the government had targeted to achieve stable condition in numbers and habitat for Sumatran and Kalimantan orangutans by 2017.

That is why, Adji added that they would require to have an assessment and evaluation on orangutan population and its habitat. Maturidi
