Waters of Gili Indah marine tourism will be examined on nitrate and phosphate levels by the Coastal and Marine Research Center, University of Mataram. Nitrate and phosphate levels which high can caused disruption to coral reefs due to algae thrives. World Conservation Society data in 2012 shows algal cover has reached 40-70 percent on the coral reefs, whereas in 1993 was less than five percent.

Head of Coastal dan Marine Research Center University of Mataram Bachtiar Imam said, “This was done because of concerns over seepage of toilet waste into the sea.” This is presumably related to the fast growing of Gili Trawangan which increasingly filled with tourism accommodation facilities.
