Gold mining activities in the area of Mount Botak, Buru Island in addition to damaging the environment also has led to disputes between residents of the area. Moreover, based on team which formed by Maluku provincial government and environmental studies center of Pattimura University Ambon recommend that certain areas around Mount Botak polluted due to the use of mercury. To maintain the security of the environment, Environmental Control Agency (BAPEDAL) Maluku confirms that the gold mining sites in the area of Mount Botak, Buru Island, closed since December 5, 2012.
