New Marine Minister targeted illegal fishing

Jakarta, Ekuatorial – New Minister Marine and Fisheries Affairs, Susi Pudjiastuti, promised to optimize the country’s marine potential.

“Indonesia’s marine wealth is enormous but have yet to be managed,” said Pudjiastuti in Jakarta, on Tuesday (28/10).

Furthermore, she said that one of her concerns was dealing with illegal fishing and over fishing in Indonesia.

“We will formulate an effective solution for these aggressors at seas. Most of them occurred in eastern parts of the country, such as Papua, Sulawesi, and borders of the country,” she said adding that her office will immediately release maps related to illegal fishing. “I want to have Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and Papua maps, among others, to monitor areas every day.”

In addition, she said that they will set up national action plan to maximize the country’s marine products. “We will record foreign and Indonesian ships to manage our seas. For the ships data, we will have it by next Friday,” she said adding that they will coordinate with maritime coordinating ministry to monitor and enforce the law.

With the data, she said that it would be easier to monitor activities at seas.

Other problems she said that she would tackle were freight rates and long distribution time. “Indonesia is an archipelago country but its transportation for fish takes too long. If fishes are dead then its value will decline,” she said citing that it took nine hours to transport fish from Lombok to Medan. Januar Hakam
