MMAF : Moratorium on fishing license to be implemented

Jakarta, Ekuatorial – Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), Susi Pudjiastuti will implement moratorium on fishing license to fight illegal fishing in Indonesian waters. “I have already proposed the ministerial decree and now waiting for the approval from Ministry of Law and Human Rights,” said Pudjiastuti, on Friday (3/11).

In addition, she will revise ministerial and government regulations allowing loading docks in the sea. “If we caught [ships] loading docks in the middle of the sea, we will freeze their licenses,” she said adding that loading docks in the sea will just open opportunities for illegal fishing by foreign vessels.

“In the revised regulations, those fish will be loaded at ports or trans-shipment in the sea,” she explained. “Monitoring illegal fishing will be easier to do. And, state revenue from fisheries sector will also improve.”

Furthermore, she encouraged for people to monitor illegal fishing in their areas. “We want people to participate in monitoring these illegal activities,” she said.

Meanwhile, Suhardi Alius of the Indonesian National Police said they would help the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in law enforcement related to illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.

“Illegal fishing has long occurred in Indonesia with more clever mode, such as changing the flag to trick marine guard,” Alius said. Januar Hakam.
