Bunaken National Park is under threat from uncontrollable waste

Manado, Ekuatorial – Massive uncontrollable waste is currently threatening Bunaken National Park, one of Indonesia’s marine beauty, said an official on Thursday (26/2), in Manado.

“”It is inevitable that waste is destroying the beauty and big name of Bunaken as one of world’s tourist destination,” said Joy Korah, head of North Sulawesi Tourism Agency.

There was no direct research on its impact to numbers of tourists coming to the island, Korah said, nevertheless the issue was being addressed by them. As a result, his office had started to cooperate with private sector to set up a clean-up beach program.

“We have a program to clean up the beach, to save Bunake from waste. It’s a cooperation with private sector, such as resort owners. We do this regularly every three months,” said Korah.

Boyke Toloh, executive director of Bunaken National Park, said that waste mostly came from Tondano river and Malalayang. “Waste from Tondano river reaches 97 percent and the rest comes from other rivers,” said Toloh. Yoseph Ikanubun
